Civil engineering association conducted a workshop on “Typesetting using LaTeX” from April 30 to May 1, 2021. Mr. Saneesh O P, Certified Microsoft Innovative Educator and Formerly Assistant Professor in Computer Science Engineering in SIMAT handled the workshop. Mr. Visakh Viswanath (S7 CE) and Mr. Joseph M S (S7 CE) were the student coordinators of the workshop. Mr. Sreekanth E M was the Faculty coordinator of the workshop.
Day 1
Mr. Sreekanth E M, faculty coordinator of Civil Engineering Association welcomed the participants including students and academicians across the country. Mr. Sudheer K V, Head of Civil Engineering Department, in his inaugural speech, specified the importance of acquiring knowledge in document preparation. He also thanked all the participants for taking interest in the workshop. Then the session was handed over to Mr. Saneesh P S.
LaTeX is a document preparation system in which the document can be prepared by typesetting. Typesetting is the process, the craft, of setting the type for a document. The job of a word processor is to produce a document that looks exactly like what you type on the screen. Typesetter takes what you type and considers it instructions for producing a document that looks as good as possible. Mr. Saneesh P S discussed collaborative typesetting using the Overleaf platform. He explained the preparation of a presentation (ppt) using LaTeX in the overleaf platform. This hands-on session was informative and interactive. Mr. Visakh Viswanath, one of the student coordinators, delivered a vote of thanks. Ms. Shana Shirin (S7 CE) beautifully anchored the event.
Day 2
Mr. Sreekanth E M welcomed all to the event. On the second day, Mr. Saneesh P S recalled the major points discussed in the first day. He gave hands-on training on the preparation of reports. LaTeX is better at dealing with mathematical notation, consistent handling of intra-document references and bibliography, separation of content and style or tables and illustrations. He also explained how to provide equations, images, and tables in LaTeX which are very important aspects in the report preparation.
At the end of the session Mr. Joseph M S, student coordinator, expressed gratitude for the active participation of the participants. He also thanked the Principal, HODs, and faculties of SIMAT for the kind support.
The number of participants was more than 90 for the event. Feedback was taken from the participants.
